wenchi crater lake is a crater that was formed by a volcanic eruption. Because it has a subsidence features, calderas create depressions that can fill with rain water over time to become a lake. Wenchi Crater Lake caldera is now an Extinct Volcano.
It has has clear, blue and some times green colored lake water surrounded by lush green forest and farm land. The lake water is one of the cleanest in Ethiopia and africa, second only to Lake Tanganica.
Lake wenchi is, a favorite of locals and visitors alike, offers horse ride , pony trekking, swimming, birdwatching, picnic areas and boat trip on beautiful and picturesque lake.
There are two well defined trails in the area. the first and common pass through a village second and longest trail pass through a forest and take longer time with secluded views and excellent opportunities for viewing monkey, hot spring, old water mil and lush green landsacpe. the trail pass through a beautiful Valley and waterfalls along the way. once you arrive on the lake take a boat ride to a small iland called of Deber, . At tis iland in the modle of the lake there is Historical Mostery of Orthodox chirstian Called Kirkos.
The shortest trail is about a 4 km it takes for 1. 5 to 2 hours walk.
At wenchi crater lake, an Endemic tree to Ethiopia called Haganyia Abysica, are a feature of the area. This plant is used by locals as a medicine. The local community of Wenchi operate a community tourism y renting horses and boat to visitors.
